Portrait of a Queen, seated three-quarter length by a curtain, wearing a lace-lined white brocade dress with ermine-lined red velvet cape, diamond brooches and the badge of the order of the Sternkreuz of Austria, her pet dog on her lap, her right hand resting on the crown on a cushion on a table nearby.

Lot Essay from Christie's

"The sitter has not been identified. Her first name if likely to start with initial T, since the chair and the dog's collar are both inscribed with this letter. On the table beside her are two crowns: one is her Kurfürstliche crown, the other appears to be royal. These crowns and the order of the sitter may be connected to her being a Habsburg Queen.

 Saleroom Notice from Christie's: We are grateful to Ludwig Meyer for pointing out that the sitter is to be identified as Friederike Caroline, Markgräfin of Brandenburg-Ansbach (1735-1791), daughter of Franz Josias, Duke of Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld. She married Christian Friedrich Carl Alexander, Markgarf of Brandenburg-Ansbach (1736-1806) in 1754. L. Meyer dates the present lot to circa 1754."
