This staircase brings the canal down from the Lancaster Canal to the Savick Brook. The wide pond in the foreground is necessary because boats, on emerging from the bottom chamber have to execute a very tight turn to continue their journey under the bridge in the left of the picture.
Gazing down into the top chamber is a larger than lifesize wooden statue of a man, labelled: "Gauging the Ripple" 4. "Water" by Thompson Dagnall. Commissioned by The Waterways Trust and British Waterways. This is one of a number of statues beside this new cut.
